Changes in the retail sector

The new Navo NLA permits the flexible utilisation of space, a factor that is gaining in significance in the retail sector. We interviewed Volker Knauff, our Head of Product Development, on the development and design of the new Navo NLA.

The new Navo NLA luminaire is the next evolution of the Navo NSK, which won the German Design Award. What’s new?

The new luminaire can be more variably integrated into retail environments and combined with spotlights. So it makes the more flexible use of space possible – an aspect that is becoming increasingly important in the retail sector, especially when you consider how flexible retail spaces have to be these days. The light strips that are often used in retail environments can’t offer that flexibility. Navo is a next-generation luminaire that is cost-effective, eco-friendly and functionally attractive, to some extent because of its design.

Does design play a role in the luminaire’s functionality? Or is the functionality reflected in the design?

Functionality, in the broadest sense, always plays a key role in product design and form should always reflect function!

For example, to meet requirements of light distribution, we developed a new reflector that allows us to configure LED light distribution according to needs on an ex-works basis. That’s important, because it permits the targeted alignment of the light, the necessary lighting flexibility and enhanced brilliance for merchandise presentation. Today’s lighting solutions have to do more than simply meet lighting requirements. They have to contribute to the in-store shopping experience. So function is always the starting point for design.

Navo’s design was inspired by the silhouette of a bird, which gives it a fresher look. We were also guided by the idea of the lightness of a flock of birds. The luminaire’s inconspicuous integration into the architectural setting, thanks to its streamlined design, does more for the room than a simple light strip can. Both the architecture and the overall composition of an indoor space are coming to play an increasingly important role in high street retail.

Do sustainability factors also play a role?

Of course. Among other things, we have reduced the product’s complexity by using only one reflector instead of multiple reflectors. We also use die-cast components made entirely of recycled aluminium. Both improve the product’s ecological and economic sustainability.

Last but not least, our Return of Light (ROL) method significantly reduces connected load through targeted light guidance, which is associated with significant energy savings. Combining light quality and energy efficiency in custom-made lighting concepts results in sustainable solutions. That’s our aim.
